Abstract

In 2005, a syndrome of memory deficits, psychiatric symptoms, decreased consciousness, and hypoventilation was reported in young women with ovarian teratomas. Specific autoantibodies to the N-methyl D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) were soon detected in these and eight other patients with similar neurological symptoms, seven of whom also had ovarian teratomas. During the following years more than 400 other patients were identified with this syndrome, many of them children and young adults with or without an associated tumor. The discovery of this disorder, termed anti-NMDAR encephalitis, has changed the diagnostic approach to clinical problems. The objective of this case is to review the main clinical features, differential diagnosis of anti NMDAR encephalitis and how the patients respond to treatment. This is a case report of a 10 year old female with chief complaints inability to sleep, accompanied by psychiatric abnormalities and neurologic deficits. She was diagnosed with anti NMDAR encephalitis after a thorough history, physical examination and a positive CSF serum results. At the present she is slowly recovering from this disease.
