Abstract
The objective of the study is to review the occurrence of IPTMC in thyroid specimens removed for benign conditions in our institutions. Histopathologic reports of 592 thyroidectomy specimens removed for benign thyroid diseases from March 2003 to March 2013 were reviewed to identify cases of incidental papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. Papillary microcarcinoma as incidental findings were also prevalent in surgically treated benign thyroid diseases in our institution. The rate of its occurrence was however lower compared to the reported prevalence rates in previous studies. Through histopathological examination of all thyroid specimens assessed to be non-malignant during preoperative evaluation is invaluable to avoid missing out the diagnosis of the tumor.
