Abstract
Memory loss is usually neglected in adults as its is considered part of the normal aging process. Because of this, elderly patients suffering from dementia are most often missed. This is a report on an elderly patient who went missing for 7 months and was found by relatives in total distraught. The patient was seen to be suffering from dementia and underwent necessary laboratory procedures to rule out other underlying cause. The patient's history of chronic smoking and alcohol abuse was ruled in as the cause of his dementia. The patient was given a glutamatergic NMDA receptor and an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, memantine and donepezil respectively. The patient with his family underwent counseling to help the family understand and support the patient's condition. This report tackles the presenting history and PE of a patient with dementia, discuss differential diagnosis and its possible underlying causes, as well as the importance of family intervention and support in patients suffering from the said disease.
