Systemic lupus erythematosus in the pediatric age group : an 8-year experience

Abstract

The objective of the study is to determine the clinical, laboratory profile, treatment regimen and outcome of pediatric SLE patients. An 8-year cross sectional retrospective study was done using an in hospital registry. Pediatric patients who fulfilled at least 4 of the 11 criteria based on the 1997 revised classification of SLE by the American College of Rheumatology were included in the study. The study concluded that pediatric SLE is more common in females, particularly in the middle adolescent age group. Malar rash was the most common feature in patients with SLE. Hematologic (80%) and renal (65%) involvement were the most commonly organ systems involved. Infection was the leading cause of complications and death.
