Thyroid function profile among Down Syndrome pediatric patients in the endocrinology clinic of De La Salle University Medical Center and St. Paul Hospital, Cavite : a 10 year review

Abstract

A retrospective cross-sectional study. A total of 43 cases of Down Syndrome were seen. No gender predominance noted. The most common maternal age and paternal age at childbirth is 35-39 years old and 40-44 years old respectively. All Down Syndrome with karyotyping were nondisjunction type. A family history of thyroid disorder had no correlation with Down syndrome with thyroid disorder. Cardiac anomalies were the most common co-morbidities. Initial thyroid function tests were mostly done at 6 moth of age and showed Hyperthyrotropinemia, as most common result. Around 20 patients were diagnosed with thyroid disorders with a prevalence rate of 46.5%, mostly diagnosed at the age of 1-2 years old and developed acquired hypothyroidism. Outcome of thyroid status on follow up were variable.
