Facilitating transition of patients with autism spectrum disorder to adult healthcare services : identifying perceptions and concerns among adult healthcare physicians in a low middle income country

Abstract

This is a qualitative study through semi-structured interview of adult physicians in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Psychiatry. A total of 21 physicians were interviewed. Data gathered was analyzed through thematic analysis. The study concluded that problems stem from the basic level of understanding and extend until the level of practice and implementation. Thus, the gaps identified through thematic analysis in this study should be taken into account through meticulous planning in policy makers that includes both pediatric and adult medical societies and government institutions, with the participation of families and individuals with Autism, as they are the main beneficiaries of this endeavor.
