Abstract
Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death among Filipinos in the last three years and has been growing exponentially. According to the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes prevalence rate in the Philippines is increasing and now rated at approximately 6.3%. To address this major public health concern, it is important to promote Diabetes Education & Awareness for the prevention and control of the disease. However, inaccessibility of these programs is one of the hindrances. Hence, this project aimed to develop and implement a health promotion program focusing on awareness and education in order to enhance the knowledge of the community and influence them on living a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, this project could be an instrument in restoring and supporting inactive Diabetes programs of the municipality and enhancing community engagement.
This capstone project followed a series of strategies namely: 1) Diabetes Education Needs Assessment Survey, 2) Coordination with Health Agencies and Project Tools Preparation, 3) Lecture/Webinar session, to address the health concern, and 4) Post-program Feedback Survey, for the final assessment and evaluation of program effectiveness.
The survey was able to gather 35 responses from the young adult population. Of these, 25 participants were able to attend the Lecture/Webinar session. As assessed, 19 (76%) of the participants effectively learned, 22 (88%) of the participants were influenced and has applied the program in their daily lives through eating healthy 25 (100%), by doing exercises and sharing learnings to peers 11 (44%). As a first health promotion program in the community, residents and barangay council members were glad that it was finally given attention.
The Health Promotion Program was effective and successful in enhancing awareness and influencing young adults of Barangay Lalakhan in living a healthier life through a healthier diet and an active lifestyle. This initiative has garnered an overall participant feedback rate of 88%. By educating the young adult community on the importance of lifestyle modification, the rising tide of Diabetes could be addressed earlier producing better health outcomes in the next generations.
