Abstract
According to the WHO, alcohol consumption causes death and disability when taken in excess early in life. Harmful use of alcohol results to a range of mental and behavioral disorders, non-communicable conditions and injuries. Drinking below 21 years old are linked with alcohol poisoning, accidents, sexual assault and violence, changes in brain development and other risk behaviors such as smoking, drug misuse and risky sexual behaviors. Individual factors, such as age, gender, familial factors and socio-economic factors plays a role in the level of alcohol consumption and patterns of drinking.
In Palanas, Masbate, Philippines, little is known about the alcohol consumption of the youth, their drinking practices, and awareness about the risks and effects of excessive alcohol drinking. The project aims to assess the knowledge, consumption and drinking practices of the youth and formulate an alcohol use awareness building program through a community-based approach. A total of 138 youth aged 13 – 20 years old were surveyed and participated in the learning and planning activity conducted in partnership with the Sangguniang Kabataan and the Local Youth Council Group.
Results indicated that although the youth know that alcohol intake has some effects to the body, they know little about alcohol poisoning, the range of illnesses that an individual can get from drinking and the specific organs affected by alcohol abuse aside from the liver. Regular teaching-learning activities through a symposium conducted by the RHU for the Local Youth Development Group were suggested to be held annually, with focus on the out-of-school youth as targets and use of social media to be administered by the youth themselves.
