Abstract

Pharmaceutical products in the Philippines are dominated by multinational brand originators. Therefore, post-marketing monitoring of these products are very important to ensure the safety of the Filipino population. The government had created laws to ensure the safety of drugs, and this includes spontaneous reporting of adverse events by healthcare professionals. Even though there is a law, there is still under-reporting of adverse events by healthcare professionals in the country due to several reasons. Hence, this capstone project is an initiative to encourage healthcare professionals to report adverse events. The author believes that the introduction of the concepts of pharmacovigilance should begin during their academic years before they enter their field of profession. For this specific project, the chosen institution was De La Salle Medical and Health Science Institute (DLSHSI), specifically the College of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. Core activities in this project includes collaboration with the chosen Colleges, conduct of pre/post-test for the knowledge and attitude towards adverse event reporting and the main intervention which is the conduct of a webinar. After the implementation of the webinar, the difference between the mean scores for the knowledge section and in the likelihood that the participants will report an adverse event whenever they encountered it was large enough to be statistically significant. The results shows that the chosen intervention has a positive effect towards their knowledge and attitude in adverse event reporting.
