Abstract

Sanitary workers are exposed to serious occupational health hazards leading to risks causing illnesses, injuries, and even death. With this, it is important that these hazards are mitigated and their occupational rights and health are further protected. This project pursued the establishment of biological safety practices of janitorial staff working in San Lazaro Hospital (SLH), an infectious disease hospital. Specifically, the project hoped to assess and increase the knowledge and practices of the janitorial staff towards biosafety. It also intended to review the current protocols for the infection control plan of the facility in order to develop a sustainable biosafety program for the services. In the implementation of the activities, it was determined that there are a few gaps when it comes to their knowledge and practices that were greatly improved after the biosafety lectures. In the Key Informant Interview and Policy Desk Review performed, while protocols for the different biosafety applications were well established, this can be further strengthened by appropriate administrative controls such as regular provision of training sessions and persistent monitoring of their practices and compliance. To ensure continuous learning and health promotion within the services, tools utilized such as the Needs Assessment Questionnaire, Lecture Modules, and Observational Checklist were endorsed to the Core Group who will also continue the creation of the operational guideline that will serve as the framework of the Services. Moving forward, to have an overall strengthened biological safety, the attitude and behavior of the workers should be assessed and improved, together with community training to guarantee the streamline of health information.
