Abstract

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a universal health threat in the general population and affects millions of individuals in different parts of the globe, including the Philippines. With an increasing trajectory of cases of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DRTB), infection control for TB has become even more crucial and burdensome. The central focus of the TB control program is dependent on immediate early case detection and complete adherence to treatment, which halt the development and occurrence of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis. This study aims to assess the attitudes of the general population towards Tuberculosis and Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Pasay City, Philippines. It also aimed to identify the personal, behavioral, and environmental factors and their influence on participants' attitudes toward TB and MDR-TB. And to explore the in-depth influence of the identified personal, behavioral, and environmental factors on the general population.

Methods: This employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method study to determine the personal, behavioral, and environmental factors associated with the attitude of the general population and to explore the in-depth influence of these factors.

Result: The study showed a positive attitude of the general population toward tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. After thematic analysis, four (4) themes were identified “The Economic Burden of Tuberculosis, Household Tuberculosis Incidence and Transmission, Service Experiences and Tuberculosis Health Service Provision, and Health-Seeking Behavior of the general population.”

Conclusion: This study concludes that the general population demonstrates a positive attitude towards tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. These themes were discovered to be an influence on the current attitude of the general population toward tuberculosis.
