Abstract
This study utilized the quasi-experimental design specifically the non-equivalent control group design or the pretest-posttest control group design. Purposive sampling was used for the selection of respondents. Forty-two (42) participants were included in the study. The study was conducted at Anquing Municipal hospital in Anquing City, Anhui Province, China which is a third-class comprehensive hospital in Anquing City. The following research instruments were used in the study: the demographic data sheet which was initially drafted by the researcher. Diet Recall form and the DASH Diet Questionnaire for Hypertensive Patients were used to gather the data. The main statistical tools used in this study were percentage distribution, mean, frequency distribution Wilcoxon signed ranks test and Mann-Whitney U test. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of patients were female, belonged to the 71-75 age group, finished elementary education, married, and with middle family monthly income, 2) The respondents in the treatment group had very low compliance to DASH diet before and high compliance to DASH diet after nutrition-based health education. On the other had, the comparison group maintained very low compliance with DASH diet throughout the study, 3) The compliance to DASH diet of the treatment group significantly improved after nutrition-based health education compared to the comparison group, 4) Nutrition-based health education is an effective intervention in improving the compliance with DASH diet of persons with hypertension.
