Abstract
This research focuses on finding the relationship between Filipino reading comprehension and the academic performance of Grade 12 Senior High School students in the specialized subjects of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute — Special Health Sciences Senior High School (DLSMHSI-SHSSHS). Guided by David Rumelhart’s Interactive Reading Theory (1977), the study aims to determine how Filipino reading comprehension, in terms of vocabulary knowledge and text comprehension, affects students’ performance in selected specialized subjects of General Chemistry and Foundation to Human Anatomy and Physiology. The study used a quantitative correlational research design with 179 respondents selected through stratified random sampling. A self-made and validated questionnaire was used to assess the respondents' comprehension levels, while their General Weighted Average (GWA) was taken as a measure of academic performance. The data were analyzed using mean, frequency, and percentage, and the Pearson correlation coefficient. The study showed that vocabulary knowledge alone did not significantly relate to the academic performance of grade 12 students, while Filipino text comprehension showed a significant relationship to the academic performance, particularly in Chemistry. Overall, this research hopes to highlight the importance of strengthening Filipino literacy among students, as it may influence their understanding and learning in science and health-related courses.
