Abstract

This study investigated the emotional preparedness of college students of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) towards caring for members of the LGBTQIA+ community in clinical settings. The research focused on assessing the students’ clinical exposure, knowledge, and attitude towards LGBTQIA+ patients to determine their level of preparedness in providing inclusive and empathetic healthcare services. By analyzing the data collected, the study found that college students demonstrated a high level of emotional preparedness, demonstrating a high level of acceptance and readiness of college students towards LGBTQIA+ patients. The data were collected from 179 respondents, from the fourth-year students of the College of Nursing in DLSMHSI, using a 15-item adapted questionnaire disseminated through Google Forms. The questionnaire assessed the college students’ clinical exposure, their knowledge about the LGBTQIA+ community, and their attitude towards LGBTQIA+ patients. The results indicated that the college students expressed and showed a positive attitude and willingness to provide inclusive and equitable care for patients who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, the findings also revealed that their clinical exposure remains limited, suggesting the need for additional clinical experience to strengthen overall preparedness.
