Abstract

The global pandemic COVID-19 has altered education schema, with De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) including Independent Study Periods (ISP) into its senior high school curriculum. ISPs provide freedom and autonomy, allowing students to manage their academic duties independently. This study aims to investigate the study practices of Grade 11 students who received high honors in Academic Year 2023-2024. A descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach was used, in line with Charles Wedemeyer’s Theory of Independent Study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted with DLSMHSI premises. Participants were chosen purposively, and the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that students use ISP for advanced study, for resource utilization, and for testing their knowledge. These practices are made easier by resources such as online modules, textbooks, and digital applications, while group study, self-study, and note-taking improve comprehension and recall. ISP also provides flexibility, schedule management, and preparation for onsite classes, which helps to foster on development of study practices.
