Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study of the parenting styles of Generation X and Generation Z in Cavite across sociocultural, economic, and technological aspects. This paper will present how the pressures of change and generational experience changed parenting style. Parents who are classified under Generation X adapt and emphasize discipline, structure, and traditional Filipino values that can be attributed to the theories developed by Diana Baumrind: the authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles, putting emphasis on moral integrity, and installing the sense of responsibility through structured guidance. Parents of Generation Z are more forgiving and communicative due to the influence of modern technologies and social paradigms. They talk about everything with their children, keep a careful eye on their mental well-being, and often use technology to teach them how to be independent. At the same time, such dependence on technologies creates problems, like control over the child's stay in the virtual space for the purpose of avoiding negative influences. This study explores the differences in discipline between Generation X and Generation Z in Filipino parenting styles, highlighting the integration of traditional values with modern rituals due to globalization. The study emphasizes the dynamic nature of Filipino parenting styles, influenced by generational shifts and societal changes. Further research is needed to explore the implications of these changing parenting styles on Filipino families in a globalized society, involving different regions and long-term studies.
