Abstract

De La Salle Medical & Health Sciences Institute has been known to be an established Catholic institution that openly welcomes all students, regardless of their religion; thus, welcoming non-Catholic students is a part of their wellestablished community. However, as a Catholic institution, its teachings are a prominent part of their identity, core values, and curriculum, such is manifested in the form of the course, Living the Lasallian Spirit (LLS). Preceding studies on the experiences of non-Catholic students in religious education similar to LLS have overlooked the descriptive experiences of Muslim students. Through a qualitative descriptive research design following a Phenomenology method, this study explored the lived experiences of Muslim senior high school students in De La Salle Medical & Health Sciences Institute as they are enrolled in the course Living the Lasallian Spirit. The results of the data gathered from the participants showed significant themes: (1) the prevalence of conflict between their religious beliefs and the religious activities practiced in LLS, (2) the development of a good relationship between the Muslim students and their respective teachers, and (3) a strong support system from peers and teachers alike within the community of De La Salle Medical & Health Sciences Institute. From this study, the need for better accommodations in terms of places to pray, halal food options, and a change in the current class schedule implemented for all senior high students in order to accommodate their prayer time and academics is highlighted and suggested for future generations of Muslim students in De La Salle Medical & Health Sciences Institute. These results provide valuable input that may serve to create a better and more inclusive community for Muslim students across different Catholic institutions.
