Abstract

Balancing academics and varsity activities can be highly challenging for students, which may impact their engagement at school. This study analyzes the academic engagement of varsity students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute and the factors influencing their engagement. A mixed-methods approach, convergent-parallel design making use of descriptive statistics and thematic analysis we utilized to analyze data from 151 varsity students. An adapted instrument was used to determine the level of engagement of varsity students across six different subscales: Teacher-Student Relationships, Peer Support at School, Control and Relevance of School Work, Future Aspirations and Goals, and Extrinsic Motivation making up affective and cognitive engagement. Ten volunteers were interviewed to determine themes affecting engagement: Relationships with Others, Balancing Responsibilities, Education and Career Goals, and Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivations. Results indicated no significant differences in engagement across age, year level, or membership type. However, females exhibited higher cognitive engagement, and thematic analysis highlighted time management and peer relationships as crucial factors, among others which affect the engagement of varsity students. The results of this study can guide institutions in providing support for their student-athletes and for any future studies on the topic.
