Abstract

X has been a go-to social media platform for Generation Z as it offers a virtual space to express who they are and soothe their conditions of stress, anxiety, loneliness, or depression. The study aims to investigate the reasons why a student uses a social media platform, how they feel when they use it and the impact of the said factors when they use the said social media. In order to get a full understanding of the experiences of the students and the significance they place on their interactions on social media, a narrative approach has been used. Six eighteen-year-old DLSMHSI Grade 12 students participated in one-on-one interviews during May 2024. The findings showed that interaction with X is a dynamic process that is impacted by many emotional factors. Positive emotions, according to the students, were the main motivating factors in their engagement. On the other hand, it was discovered that negative emotions may hinder them from engaging with X. Furthermore, the study found that not every student had the same level of engagement. Every student's experience with X was greatly influenced by their own emotions and interests. Engagement on X is not only about scrolling and posting; it’s about forming connections, building communities, and amplifying diverse voices. The emotional factors encompass a wide range of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and surprise, which can affect how we act and react in different situations.
