Abstract
Following years of online learning due to COVID-19, face-to-face classes have resumed in the Philippines, enhancing self-awareness and emphasizing body image and socialization. This mixed-methods study explores body image perceptions among Special Health Sciences Senior High School (SHSSHS) students at De La Salle Medical Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI), considering factors like age, BMI, sex, self-esteem, and social support, as well as socialization dynamics with family, friends, peers, social media, and teachers. The research employed an explanatory sequential design, using quantitative methods to gather numerical data initially, followed by qualitative methods for context, incorporating stratified random sampling and the snowball method for participant recruitment, culminating in comprehensive insights into students' perceptions and experiences. The study among DLSMHSI SHSSHS students provides insights into their perceptions of body image and socialization, revealing a generally neutral perspective with nuances related to age, BMI, and social influences. Social media emerges as a strong negative influencer, while family and peers play significant but nuanced roles in shaping students' self-perceptions. Integrating quantitative and qualitative data enriches the understanding of body image dynamics, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to addressing adolescent body image concerns. The results underscore the importance of integrating both quantitative and qualitative perspectives to understand body image and socialization dynamics among DLSMHSI SHSSHS students, emphasizing the significant role of social factors and the need to cultivate supportive environments to enhance positive selfperception within schools.
