Abstract
This study is an experimental research that was conducted on a particular sample of Rattus norvegicus (Sprague Dawley) rats that satisfies the inclusion criteria in this study, which is to be described later on, in order to know the combined and independent pharmacological effects of Sargassum sp. and Low Molecular Weight Heparin (Enoxaparin) as anticoagulants. 16 rats were divided into four groups: (G1) negative control, (G2) positive control (Enoxaparin), (G3) tratment 1 - Sargassum sp. only and (G4) treatment 2 - Sargassum sp. and Enoxaparin. The subjects were acclimated for 14 days before the experimentation proceeded. Sargassum sp. crude extract at 1mL/100g weight was administered via oral gavage and Enoxaparin was given intramuscularly through 0.04 mL pre-filled injections respectively. Findings show that Treatment groups 1 and 2 recorded high prothrombin time (PT) and partial thromboplastin time (PT) which are parameters indicating an effect on the clotting factors. Differently, the Treatment 1 and Treatment 2 groups did not have high bleeding time unlike the positive control group which showed excessive bleeding; thus this adverse effect was not evident in rats under G3 and G4. Statistically, the research concludes that the PT and PTT of G3 had a significant difference (p< 0.01) with G1's indicating that the Sargassum sp. treatment had a significant anticoagulant effect. Furthermore, both the PT and PTT of G3 had no significance difference (p>0.05) with that of the goal standard, Enoxaparin (G2). This indicates that, with further evidence in the future, the Sargassum sp. treatment can be an alternative of choice for individuals who are prone to clots as a preventive and emergency treatment. The PT of G4 when compared to G2 had no significant difference: however, the PTT showed otherwise. In lieu of this extensive biochemical procedures and methodical variations are recommend to confirm the antagonistic of synergistic property of the combined treatment.
