Abstract
There has been a shortage of RSLPs practicing in the hospital setting in the Philippines, as reported by national statistics and the abundance of job listings from hospitals. As such, this study described the determinants of hospital-based practice among Registered Speech Language Pathology Alumni of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). A descriptive qualitative research design was utilized with data collected from three (3) Registered Speech Language Pathologists (RSLPs) through a semi-structured Key informant (KII) virtual interview guided by a 3rd party interviewer to minimize researcher bias. Five (5) main themes were identified: (1) Workplace Environment Conveniences and Social Influences; (2) Higher Income and Presence of Job Benefits; (3) Varied and Stable Patient Caseload; (4) Clinical Preparation and Professional Development Opportunities; and (5) Identity-driven and Purpose-oriented Motivation and Values. Findings reveal that these identified themes serve as determinants of their employment decision towards hospital-based practice. These factors are interdependent and do not act in isolation since contextual, financial, organizational, professional, and personal determinants were factored into decisions to enter hospital-based practice. By elucidating these factors, this study partially explains the underlying reasons behind the disproportionately low number of RSLPs working in the hospital setting, as evidenced by national statistics. Consequently, this may inform employment decisions, emphasize the need for targeted recruitment strategies, improve clinical training, and introduce policy reforms. Recommendations include addressing study limitations, suggestions to guide future studies, promotion of hospital-based employment, and increasing opportunities for institutional undergraduate systems in BS Speech-Language Pathology.
