Abstract
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in the academe play a critical role in educating future practitioners, yet limited literature examines the factors influencing their retention in the academe. This study aimed to identify and describe the challenges and factors affecting the retention of SLPs working in the academe at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). A qualitative descriptive research design was employed. Data were collected through one-on-one semi-structured online interviews with three (3) SLP faculty members. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed twelve (12) themes, consisting of five (5) challenges and seven (7) retention factors. Key challenges included workload demands, role overload, limited institutional resources, and the need to continuously adapt teaching strategies due to changing modalities and student needs. These reflect the complexity of balancing multiple academic, clinical, and administrative responsibilities. Despite these challenges, retention was influenced by factors such as passion for teaching, sense of purpose, fulfillment in student development, supportive collegial relationships, and alignment with personal and professional values. The findings suggest that retention in the academe is shaped by the interaction of workplace demands and intrinsic motivations. Addressing structural challenges while strengthening supportive and motivating factors may enhance faculty retention, improve work experiences, and support the long-term sustainability of SLP education programs.
