Abstract

This study described the BSRT students’ peer group influence on academic motivation. The participants are third year students from DLSMHSI enrolled during the second semester of academic year 2022-2023 who experienced both online and onsite modes of learning. This study utilized qualitative research design particularly descriptive qualitative approach. Through purposive sampling, the participants were chosen.

Six themes emerged from the study: the perspective of participants on academic motivation; peer groups' influence on academic motivation in both environments; engagement in group reviews; comparison, competition, and constructed goals; amount of interaction, and peer group's words of encouragement. The results indicated that peer groups, such as classmates, friends, and organization mates, had influence on participants' academic motivation in various ways. The peers' physical presence, academic behavior, and characteristics motivated the participants to study and engage in similar activities. However, negative influences such as different learning styles and goals among peers presented challenges and led to feelings of pressure, negatively affecting academic motivation. The study concluded that peer groups have both positive and negative influence on academic motivation, with a greater influence in an on-site than in an online environment.

It is recommended that the possibility of providing more areas for student’s academic interactions and the utilization of more online group study platforms be looked into. Additionally, it is suggested that the proactive involvement of guidance counselors be continued, and implementation of peer counseling program be considered.
