Abstract

The main objective of this study is to determine the relationship between the patients' Knowledge on radiation hazards and radiation protection and their attitude toward radiologic procedures on selected hospitals in Metro Manila and Cavite during the period October 9 to 30, 1995. Specifically: (1) To find out the level of the patient knowledge on radiation hazard on selected hospitals in Metro Manila and Cavite during the period October 9 to 30, 1995. (2) To determine the level of the respondents knowledge on radiation protection. (3) To determine the respondents attitude towards radiologic procedure. (4) To determine the significant relationship between the respondents knowledge on radiation hazard and radiation protection and their attitude towards radiologic procedures. The respondents involved in this study were 597 patients from the four selected hospitals in Metro Manila and Cavite which include Medical Center Manila, University Medical Center, Jose Reyes Memorial Hospital and Andres Bonifacio Memorial Hospital. This is a descriptive-correlation type of research. Questionnaire supplemented with interview were used to gather data to answer the problems presented in this study. The statistical tools used were frequency distribution, percentage and chi-square. These were utilized to account all the data gathered for analysis and interpretation. Based from the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Most of the patients considered x-ray as beneficial and few knew it as hazardous. (2) A large percentage of the respondents were not knowledgeable on the effect of x-ray. (3) For those who have knowledge on x-ray effect, many of them knew that it has cancerous effect. Few knew about sterility and baldness. (4) A big percentage of the respondents knew nothing about radiation protection. (5) Most of the patients were willing to undergo x-ray and had no reaction.To them it is just alright to undergo x-ray examination for medical reason. (6) There is a significant relationship between the patients knowledge on radiation hazard and radiation protection and their attitude towards radiologic procedures. Many patients had positive attitude towards x-ray examinations because of its medical value.
