Abstract

This study examined the association between work-related physical activity (WRPA) and cardiovascular risk (CVR) among employees of a higher education institution. A correlational study was used, involving 202 participants, who were ≥18 years old and employed in the institution for at least 12 months. WRPA was measured using the Occupational Sitting and Physical Activity Questionnaire (OSPAQ), while CVR was measured using the INTERHEART Risk Score (IHRS). Pearson correlation analysis revealed that time spent sitting has a weak positive correlation with CVR (r = .168, p = .017). In addition, time spent performing heavy labor also showed a weak but negative correlation with CVR (r = −.158, p = .025). In contrast, no significant relationship was found between time spent standing (r = −.128, p = .070) and walking (r = .020, p = .779) with CVR. This indicates that higher engagement in physically demanding work activities was associated with slightly lower cardiovascular risk. Simple linear regression analysis further indicated that the amount of sitting (β = .168, p = .017) and heavy labor (β = −.158, p = .025) significantly predicted  CVR, explaining 2.8% (R² = .028) and 2.5% (R² = .025) of the variance in CVR respectively. The findings of the study support the need to reduce sedentary behavior in the workplace and encourage more occupational movement to promote cardiovascular health.
