Abstract

This study examined the relationship between dormitory environment satisfaction and academic motivation among students. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the research highlights the role of environmental factors, particularly within the dormitory setting, in shaping students’ academic motivation. The dormitory environment satisfaction and level of motivation was analyzed across four domains: student living conditions, community facilities and services, neighborhood physical surroundings, and students’ social activities, encompassing both physical and psychosocial dimensions of student life. A descriptive-correlational design was employed among 135 first to third year CRS students selected through purposive sampling. Data was collected using an adopted-modified questionnaire from an existing local instrument and the academic motivation scale was constructed based on established motivational constructs. Both instruments underwent expert validation and pilot testing to ensure clarity and reliability. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation to examine the relationship between dormitory satisfaction and academic motivation, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results indicated moderate to high satisfaction with the dormitory environment (mean = 3.89) and moderate to high academic motivation (mean = 4.45) among the participants. Notably, a significant positive correlation emerged between dormitory satisfaction and academic motivation (r = 0.402). In conclusion, satisfaction in dormitory environment is a significant factor influencing academic motivation. These findings underscore the importance of improving the physical and psychosocial aspects of dormitory living to enhance students’ academic engagement and overall well-being. Recommendations to dormitory administrators and academic institutions include prioritization of establishment of respectful dormitory culture policies that promote peer-supportive environments.
