Abstract
Foot ulcerations can be life and limb threatening for diabetic patients. It may lead to gangrene and the most frequent cause of amputations in the adult age group. This study aimed to determine the level of awareness, knowledge, and practice of diabetic patients regarding Diabetes Mellitus with emphasis on proper foot care. Data obtained through a questionnaire. 53 diabetic patients from affiliation centers of De La Salle University-Aguinaldo College of Physical Therapy included in the study. The results of the study summarized as follows (1) the majority of the respondents were elderly and achieved at least a secondary level of education. (2) the most well-known complications of Diabetes Mellitus in the study were lower extremity amputation due to gangrene and foot ulcerations. (3 Most of the patients in the study have previously instructed a proper diet as a preventive measure by their doctors. (4) Respondents were not aware of the practices of proper foot care, although most of them have good test scores. It strongly recommended the need for a structured education program for diabetic patients strengthened by doing a similar study on a greater number of respondents, both undergoing regular medical care and not. Those physicians and all members of the rehabilitation team be the first to undergo a reorientation on the preventive care program and the importance of patient education provided. Ideally, a study performed on the own knowledge and practice of theses health personnel so that the proposed reorientation program will be relevant to their needs. That a manual developed on Diabetes Mellitus to reinforce home instructions given to patients. The education of other family members should consider since most of these patients were likely, to be elderly.
