Abstract
This study employed a descriptive design using a survey technique with a self-made questionnaire distributed to 51 respondents in the Philippine Orthopedic Center and Ospital ng Maynila from the period of July 1-September 30, 1992 chosen through simple quota sampling. The gathered data from the questionnaire tallied, tabulated, and analyzed and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. This study was on the knowledge of arthritic patients, regarding joint conservation and joint protection techniques. Especially, it aimed to determine the demographic characteristic, diagnosis, extent, and duration of arthritis, areas of joint conservation and protection techniques that were most famously known and least known to the patients and the type of information given to them. Results revealed that majority were females with age ranging from 40-60 years old and level of education was relatively high with finishing college, most common diagnosis was Degenerative joint disease (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) of one-month duration involving primarily the knees and hands with joint pains and swelling as the common signs and symptoms. No patient was completely knowledgeable regarding joint protection and conservation technique. The area had the most famously known to the arthritic patients were a proper choice of water temperature and proper way of picking up objects. Areas were least knowledgeable in proper jar opening and proper bed sleeping position. Given the least information regarding joint protection and proper use of joint. The researchers, therefore, recommend an emphasis on areas were least knowledgeable, continue distribution of pamphlets, educational programs, and other researchers to continue the study.
