Abstract
This descriptive study aims to determine the most common home remedies and related practices of arthritics patients prior to consultation with physicians. Self-made questionnaire was distributed to 32 respondents were arthritic patients from eight (8) affiliation centers of DLSU-CPT Interns '95 from the period of August to December 1994 Respondents of the study were the arthritic patients of the aforementioned affiliation centers during the period of August- December 1994 chosen through simple quota sampling. The researchers made use of a questionnaire written in Filipino to gather information needed. The data from the questionnaire was tallied, tabulated, and analyzed. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Based on the results, the most common home remedy used by the respondents prior to consultation to physicians based on the results of the questionnaire were the application of ointment/liniment (17) followed closely by forms of heat in the form of hot bottle, hot compress (15), and the most common related practice resorted to was rest of the affected part (11). Note that there were multiple responses to this question and likewise no respondent answered the use of cold as a home remedy, this maybe due to the lack of knowledge on the beneficial effects of cold especially during acute attacks of symptoms. The authors recommend that further study be made based on the results of this research. A manual; containing home instructions on the proper use of cold in the form of ice be made written in simple or layman terms to adequately educate our arthritic patients on the beneficial effects of this modality. Through this way patients education can further be intensified and provide another alternative home remedy that maybe simple yet effective.
