Abstract

This study aims to determine the five most common musculoskeletal injuries of young football varsity players. This was conducted in three different schools, namely: De La Salle-Lipa, San Beda College and U.P Rural High School- Los Baños having 44 male football players and five coaches are respondents. Data was then analyzed descriptively through construction of tables and graphs and presented in terms of frequencies and percentages. Results of those study showed that majority of football players ages 15-16 years old with the height ranging from 5'2'' to 5'5'' and mostly were mesomorph have sustained injuries. Most of them were fullback / defender and forward/ attacker and linkman/ midfieldman. The usual presentation of injury were pain, swelling, redness, and skin lesions (e.g hematoma, bruises, contusions) and the most commonly affected joints were ankle and knee joints. In conclusion, the five most common type of musculoskeletal injuries among football players were ligamentous rupture and strain, muscle strain and rupture and fracture of broken bone. Due to limitations of this study, further research should be made with emphasis on the need to provide the players an awareness to the seriousness of the risks directly related to the contact nature of the sport, the level of competition, and the vulnerability of the athletes by giving manuals or orientation to both coaches and football players and informing about the need for a regular medical follow-up check-up.
