Abstract

The absence of studies on the components of patient education of stroke patients prompted the researchers to determine the current practice of physical therapy interns in educating their stroke patients using the Sluijs Checklist for educational activities. The researchers used descriptive design using the survey technique with a self-made questionnaire distributed to 13 physical therapy interns and stroke patients and/or relatives at four different affiliation centers from July to September 1993 chosen through simple quota sampling. A checklist used to record the observations made by physical therapy interns as they evaluate and treat their stroke patients, and a questionnaire to elicit data from the patients to supplement the observation. The data from the questionnaire tallied, tabulated, and analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results of this study provided the researchers with baseline information on the components of patient education. This new knowledge would benefit the patients, hopefully, the succeeding physical therapy interns and rehabilitation centers. Based on the observation, patient education given to stroke patients centered on informing the patients on the motor impairment that results from stroke, on instructing the patients on the different exercises including the frequency and duration of each exercise, and in educating them on the risk factors for stroke. Results showed physical therapy interns inadequately educated their stroke patients based on Sluijs Checklist for educational activities. The researchers recommended a follow-up study involving a greater number of physical therapy interns made to obtain a sufficient study population.
