Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the architectural accessibility of selcted buildings of DLSU-A for the disabled based on the Batas Pambansa Bilang 344 (Accesibility Law). The researchers used the descriptive design using survey technique. The survey instrument used in this study was a form based on the minimum requirements for the accessible educational institution as provided by the Accessibility Law. The instrument was a 16 item checklist that recorded the presence of architectural features and barriers in the areas evaluated. The specifications of the different design elements were measured, described, and recorded based on this survey instrument. The results of the study showed that out of the 16 design elements essentials for an accessible educational institution, only walkways, width of the corridors, parking areas and floors were found to be consistently accessible in all 3 buildings assessed. Major areas of inaccessibility were doors and entrances, washrooms and toilets, height above the floor of switches and controls, handrails and thresholds. Absent design elements included elevators, ramps, water fountains, public telephones, places of assembly, and graphic signs. The researchers recommend that barrier free facilities and accessible features be added in the future design of an accessible DLSU-A.
