Abstract
This descriptive study had 20 randomly respondents chosen through simple quota sampling. The respondents were 10 midwives and 10 hilot or traditional birth attendants in Bauan, Batangas. Each respondent was given a questionnaire with the following illustrated deformities: clubfoot, flatfoot, scoliosis and congenital amputation. An actual interview was done to know their ability to recognize the above-mentioned deformities. The instrument was translated into Tagalog. The data from the questionnaire was tallied, tabulated, and analyzed. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Findings of the study showed that midwives were knowledgeable in recognizing a child with congenital deformity. The hilot were only able to describe in their language the congenital such as "baluktot or pilantod". As to primary management given by the two groups, midwives agreed to giving correctives devices. Exercises and gentle manipulation of the affected part was prescribed and referral was done if conservative management was ineffective. Hilot choose to give massage and manipulation of the joints, revealing that they barely knew something about corrective devices. However, both group respondents were not knowledgeable in the proper referral of congenital deformities. In conclusion, midwives and hilot of Bauan, Batangas have very limited knowledge regarding the recognition, primary management and timely referral of congenital deformities.
