Abstract

No clinic Training Program exists in the Philippines at the present. Majority of local Physical Therapiest intend to go abroad, especially to the United States. Quantity should not be without quality. For the above reason, the authors conducted a study aimed to evaluate certain skills supposedly practiced and developed by PT Interns rotating in 3 DLSU affiliation Centers from April 1994- October 1994. Eight selected skills for evaluation involving Coping with emotions. Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice, Professional Growth and Development, Rapport with Patients Family. Interaction with Co-Workers, Evaluation Process, Short and Long Term Goal Planning, and Modifying Treatment programs, were adapted from the Physical Therapy Mentor Program set by American PT Schools. Data was obtained through questionnaires distributed to the PT Interns and Clinical Supervisors of the chosen affiliation centers of DLSU-College of PT. Based on the results; Medical City practices all 8 selected skills approximately 100% of the time: St. Luke's Medical Center applies 6 skills, 100% of the time, namely: Professional Conduct and Ethical Practices, Professional Growth and Development. Rapport with Patient's Family, Interaction with Co-Workers, Evaluation Process, and Planning and Modification of treatment Programs, with the other two skills: Coping with Emotions and Development of Short and Long Term Goals, were practiced 75% of the time; Polymedic General Hospital practices only 2 skills, 100% of the time, which are: Rapport with Patient's Family and Planning and Modification of Treatment Program, with the remaining 6 skills practiced 75% of the time, being: Coping with Emotions, Professional Conduct and Ethical Practices, Professional Growth and Development, Interaction with Co-Workers, Evaluate Process, and Development of Short and Long Term Goals. The authors consider the clinical training grounds provided by the medical City to be quality in the area of the eight selected skills. The researchers encourage a follow up study on the clinical internship training of the two other centers, Polymedic General Hospital and St. Luke's Medical Center, for a more extensive and thorough re-evaluation which may help upgrade their present training grounds. The researchers also recommend that the same evaluation tool, the PT Mentor Program, be used to regularly evaluate other affiliation centers of DLSU-College of PT for at least 2 years and study the results to check the quality of training grounds and practicing skills needed for those who intend to work abroad.
