Abstract
Musculoskeletal complaints and injuries have been found to limit the performance of ballet dancers and oftentimes cut-short the dreams of ballet student to become principal dancers someday. Although several studies in other countries have been done by members of the rehabilitation team, little is still known regarding the local performing artist and their problems. A description study on the five most common musculoskeletal complains among ballet student was then done. The study was conducted by distributing questionnaires among the students of three recognized ballet schools in Metro Manila which are the Ballet Philippines, the Philippine Ballet Theater and the Halili- Cruz School of Art. Some students of the Halili-Cruz School of Art were interviewed using the same questionnaires. Data gathered were tabulated and analyzed by computing percentages and from them the five (5) highest complaints and locations of complaints were determined. Finding in the study showed that the five most common musculoskeletal complaints among ballet student under study were the following: muscle pain; muscle weakness; blisters; swelling, stiffness and limping; and joint pain while the common specific location of their occurrence are the following: legs; thighs; foot and toes; ankles; and back. The following recommendations were presented: to perform the study on their population groups of ballet dancers; for Physiatrists, Orthopedic doctors, physical therapist, and occupational therapist to look further into these complaints and their causes in order to develop ways of systematically evaluating, diagnosing, managing and preventing them. Lastly, it was also recommended that ballet student as well as professional ballet dancers be aware of the promising role of physical therapy on their physical well being by providing them with adequate education and treatment.
