Abstract

This study is designed to determine the most common complaints in the upper extremity among Filipino carpenters working in Cavite. The results of the study would serve as a baseline information for the Physical Therapist to provide some preventive measures against the occurrence and aggravation of the upper extremity problems among carpenters. 50 carpenters who were working in 5 construction site in Cavite, who've met the criteria were included in the study with age ranging from 25-54 years old. An interview guide was utilized in the data gathering. Some interviews and observations were also made by the researchers. Data was analyzed descriptively with the use of percentage technique result showed that the most common complaint in the upper extremity is shoulder pain followed by pain in the arm and wrist. Researchers suggest that a follow-up study be conducted to further assess the nature of the complaints felt by the carpenters, and also to have similar study be done in the other work related upper extremity problems. Research was of descriptive type and data were gathered through the use of questionnaires distributed to 61 carpenters working in 2 towns of Cavite: Bacoor and Kawit who are experiencing problems or complaints in the upper extremity due to carpentry. Out of 61, 50 subjects were considered qualified for the criteria given with inclusion criteria of 2 not more than the age of 55, experiencing medical or surgical problems on same laterality complained, and the working 2 years and below as a carpenter. A percentage technique was used to analyze the data gahtered from the respondents: P + n/N x 100; where P + is the precentage, N = is the number of cases, n = is the no of responses. the results indicate that the most common area most common complaint is pain which includes muscle and joint pain. The researchers conclude that most common area complained in the upper extremity is the shoulder and the most common complaint is pain which includes muscle and joint pain. The researchers conclude that most common complaints in upper extremity among Filipino carpenters working in Cavite is pain in the shoulder and wrist/hand pain involving the dominant extremity. A proper education and information regarding the condition affecting the upper extremity is suitable for the carpenters. The researchers also suggest to have a follow-up study regarding first aid treatment the carpenters used with their complaints and it's effectivity.
