Abstract

The number of children born with physical impairments has been increasing for the last decade. Since an impaired child cannot fully meet his responsibilities and this may hinder his normal activities which later on makes him a burden to the society congenital problems will facilitate the development of appropriate and relevant preventive programs. A careful review of medical records every year from January 1984 to December 1993 was done but only few congenital physical deformities were seen since they lack a systematic and organized records keeping. All data were analyzed descriptively. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. 47 Babies were identified to present Congenital Physical Deformities. Results revealed that the five most common congenital physical deformities found in newly born babies were as follows: cleft-lip and palate (36.7%), undescended testes (12.76%) and lastly, polydactyly (8.5%). The author recommend that an organized, accurate and separate records of new born babies with congenital physical deformities should be set up. In this way, medical staff and future researchers will be able to monitor the percentage of patients with congenital physical deformities in which they will also have a perspective about the cause and ways of dealing with it. Thus they can formulate a program in educating future mothers.
