Abstract

Based on the report by the Department of Health (DOH), 70% of all live births in the country are attended to by traditional birth attendants (Hilots) and registered Midwives, It was also reported that congenital deformities have mortality in children, of which if left unattended will eventually lead to debilitating deformities. This descriptive study showed that Hilots and Midwives were poorly knowledgeable about the signs, management and right time to refer patients with congenital impairments. Self-made questionnaire was distributed to 24 respondents were hilots and midwives in Lumang Bayan, Dasmariñas chosen through simple quota sampling. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires. An one day training program was given to the Hilots and Midwives of Rural Health Unit-1, Lumang Bayan, Dasmariñas, Cavite regarding the identification, complications and basic management of certain common congenital deformities. Data collected were presented in frequency percentage, mean, and T-test. Among the 19 midwives and hilots the study showed that there was an average increase of 24.17% in the results between the pre-test and post-test of the respondents. The most difficult question encountered in both pre-tests and post-test was regarding the time of referral for flat foot. On the other hand, question #10 was the easiest question #9 and #14 , 9 being the question on the types of congenital Amputations, as the easiest question for the post-test. The T-test showed a T-computed of 8.23 against a T-tabular of 2.069, a difference of 6.161 which signifies effectivity of our training method, With regard to the results of the practical exam, the respondents average score was very good, (4.5/5) of which the respondents, 15 got an Foot cases, Also of the 24 respondents ., 15 got an satisfactory. the respondents likewise achieved a score 95.83% regarding the basic management and identification of Congenital Hip Dislocation as well as the identification of Congenital Amputations. There were also apparent significant increase in the respondents post-test. the authors therefore conclude that the formal training program was effective in educating the hilots and midwives regarding the rudiments of certain common congenital deformities. It was recommended that in the event of future studies regarding this matter that the effectivity of such a program be considered separately between hilots and midwives as this was not the case in this study due primarily to the poor turn-out of hilots.
