Abstract
Health care workers are one of the highest risk groups that need to be protected against HIV infections/AIDS. This is because they are exposed to the blood of an HIV infected person through needles and other skin piercing instruments, mucous membrane contact. Through splash of blood through open wound or broken skin. In lieu with this, the researchers wanted to assess and further improve with the knowledge of Estrella hospital workers regarding HIV/AIDS through a training program since there is no better way of prevention other than education. The researchers used the descriptive design using survey technique. Self-made questionnaire was distributed to 20 respondents were health workers chosen through simple quota sampling. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires and was translated into Tagalog. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage, mean, and T-test. Results of the study were the following, (1.) There was an increase in the average scores from 75% in the pretest to 91% in the post test; (2.) There was a very low level of knowledge regarding difference of HIV/ AIDS from signs and symptoms of AIDS among health care workers prior to training in spite of their background; (3.) There was a significant increase in the knowledge of the participants based on their performance in the written exam after training program; (4.) the average exam score for the subjects with medical background was 75.4% in the pretest compare to 90.8% in the post test. The authors therefore conclude that the training program was effective in increasing the knowledge of Estrella hospital workers regarding AIDS. It is recommended that the same study should be conducted not only on other rural hospital within Cavite but in urban hospitals as well, consisting of an updated training manual with drills and program should be a part of all HCWs involved in any small or big rural hospitals as well as in urban hospitals.
