Abstract

Implementation a training program for diabetic patients about proper foot care is in line with the objectives of the extended "Decade of Disabled Persons" which deals now with the preventive rehabilitation in the community. The researchers made use of the descriptive method using survey technique. Self-made questionnaire was distributed to 7 respondents were barangay health workers in Barangay Buisan, Dasmariñas, Cavite chosen through simple quota sampling. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires and translated into Tagalog. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage, mean, and T-test. The more the diabetic understands his/her body the more are the chances of controlling the disease and prevent complications. In recent studies, patients undergoing rehabilitation have a low level of knowledge regarding proper foot care. Another study showed an effectivity of using manuals in increasing the knowledge of diabetic patients on proper foot care. However, it was strongly recommended that a formal, structured training program that will educate barangay health workers of Barangay Buisan, Dasmariñas, Cavite on proper foot care of diabetic patients through the use of lectures and practical demonstrations of basic procedures that are needed. Results of the study showed a significant increase in the knowledge of the participants based on their performance on the written exams. The average exam score was 36.05% in the pre-test was on what to do when foot infections occur. After the practical and written exam, their knowledge on this topic increased from 0 to 100%. The authors therefore concluded that a structured, formal training program is effective in educating barangay health workers about proper foot care and hygiene of diabetic patients as a necessary preventive care measure. A follow-up study involving a larger group of barangay health workers with trainers is strongly be a regular part of rehabilitation of all diabetic patients.
