Abstract
In the 70's the World Health organization set the goal : "health for all the year 2000". In this program residents of the barangay or community level are trained as community health workers (CHW). These CHW's evaluate and identify the health needs and problems at the primary level and give both basic preventive and curative care utilizing local resources. A few years later the principles of Primary Health care (PHW) was applied to the field of Rehabilitation Medicine. This new program was called Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR). The lack of availability of community health workers capable of pulmophysiotherapy prompted the authors to develop a manual on Basic Pulmonary Rehabilitation Techniques to be used as a means of increasing the knowledge of community health workers in Sitio Ilang-Ilang of Barangay Batas, Silang, Cavite. The researchers used the descriptive design using survey technique. Self-made questionnaire was distributed to five (5) respondents were barangay health workers chosen through simple quota sampling. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires and translated into Tagalog. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Based on the findings, most of the respondents are female, aged ranging from 16 to 38 years. Results of the study showed a significant increase in the knowledge of the participants based on their performance in the written and practical exam. The average exam score was 28% in the pre-test compared to 58% in the post-test. The topic in which the BHWs had least knowledge in the pre-test on the effect, and purpose of breathing exercise, and correct techniques on stair climbing exercise. After the practical and written exam their knowledge increased from 0 to 20%, and 0 to 60% respectively. The authors therefore conclude that a structured lecture through a manual is effective in educating the BHWs on basic pulmo physiotherapy technique. A follow-up study and a formal training program for the BHWs is strongly recommended.
