Abstract

Stroke survivors may be left with severe mental and physical disabilities, which create major economic and social problems. With increasing numbers of elderly person in the population, stroke and its rehabilitation are a matter of great concern to society. Lack of movement, often accompanied by lack of sensation, is frightening and frustrating for a stroke patient. Ambulation and transfer problems also pose as a major factor for total, if not partial dependency of the patient. It is for above reason that this case of Z.M. 50 year old female stroke patient from Dasmariñas, Cavite diagnosed to have cerebrovascular accident with right middle cerebral artery distribution, is being presented. The main objective of this study is to show the relevance of early rehabilitation and home program in the recovery of the patient to carry them out properly so we may prevent secondary complications which are not necessary. Upon re-evaluation, the patient revealed the following datas: weakness of left UE & UE (Gross Grade) 3+/5, good sitting and standing balance, ADL partial dependence and difficulties, gait deviation: circumduction of left hip and absence of heel strike, poor left hand grip, atrophy of left calf muscles. Weakness of left UE & LE as well as lack of proper training that should have been included in rehabilitation cause unnecessary difficulties in ADL and gait in our client. It is for this reason that home instructions and other modifications regarding these ADL problems are recommended. Researchers also gave some exercises for maintenance of range of motion and strength as well as exercises for finger dexterity were also given. Training of proper dressing were also given as well as use of affordable adaptive devices were suggested.
