Abstract

Compliance with the prescribed frequency of the treatment schedule is essential in the success of the physical therapy program. however, it was observed that in the DLSUMC-DIMDRU, most of the out-patients do not follow the prescribed physical therapy schedule. Thus, this prompted the researchers to conduct a study on the problems encountered by such patients that may contribute to their poor compliance. This aims to help the allied medical professionals in the rehabilitation of the patient to be aware of several factors contributing to their failure in complying with prescribed frequency of the PT treatment program. In the different studies conducted, it was found out that some of the patients are hesitant to visit the rehabilitation clinic or just disinclined to attend their PT sessions while other find the transportation problem a major hindrance. Another reason cited has something to do with the geographical factor. The descriptive type of research design was utilized in this study and was then conducted in De La Salle University Medical Center - Dr. Isagani M. Darvin Rehabilitation Unit. Of the 100 inactive patients, only 40% were included in the study. Data were gathered through questionnaire. The results of the study showed that geographical factor which includes the distance from the patient's house to the rehabilitation center rank first with 20%. The study also showed that social, economic and psychological reasons did not turn out to be major problems. The results of the study showed that geographical factor which includes the distance from the patient's house to the rehabilitation center rank first which comprises about 27.5%. This was then followed by physical factors with 20%. The study also showed that social, economic and psychological reasons did not turn out to be major problems. The author therefore concluded that most common factor affecting the DLSUMC-DIMDRU's out-patients compliance to their physical therapy treatment course is geographical in nature.
