Abstract
Due to high incidence of stroke and the importance of achieving independence in activities of daily living, the researchers were prompted to make a study on the five most common problems in activities of daily living encountered by right hemiplegic patients. Results of the study will serve as a guide and provide additional knowledge regarding what to expect and consider in ADL training in right hemiplegic patients. This study was conducted in three selected affiliated centers of DLSU-HSC (Dr. Isagani M. Darvin Rehabilitation Unit, Jose P. Rizal Memorial Center, and St. Dominic MEdical Center) were inclusion criteria was used to determine the study population. A questionnaire was distributed to the subjects and results were tallied and analyzed descriptively. Results indicated that the five most common problems in activites of daily living encountered by right hemiplegic patients as to being minimally assisted are as follows: 1) bladder mgt., 2) dressing-upper, 3) dressing-lower, 4) eating, 5) bed, chair and wheelchair transfer. The activites wherein patient needs moderate assistance are listed as follows: 1) grooming, 2) going up and down stairs, 3) bathing, 4)bowel mgt. and 5) dressing-upper and toilet/tub transfers. The results for the 5 most common problems experienced by patients who require maximal assistance are the following: 1) going up and down stairs 2) bathing, 3) bowel mgt. 4) dressing-upper and 5) dressing-lower. Common causes which limit the patient in performing their ADL's are brought about by weakness of the affected side, weakness of the unaffected side, paralysis, stiffness of the affected extremities and symptoms of pain on the hemiplegic side. After obtaining the results of this study, the authors would like to recommend that another study should be conducted with more number of respondents to further test its reliability. And also, for the therapist to focus on the five most common problems identified (per level of assistance) in this study so that right hemiplegic patients would be able to attain their highest function.
