Abstract

A survey was implemented to identify the most common musculoskeletal complaints among piano instructors in YAMAHA School of Music located at South Mall Las Piñas, SM North EDSA, Quezon City and BF Homes Parañaque. 12 Piano instructors of Yamaha responded to questionnaires made by the authors. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results that pain, stiffness, and cramps were the three most common musculoskeletal complaints among pianists. Parts that are mostly involved were back, neck, hand, and wrist. The symptoms usually appear after rehearsals lasting for less than 30 minutes and usually affects their agility. Majority of them did not seek any medical health and only 2 of them underwent physical therapy. Self-medication was the usual practice to relieve them off the discomforts. It is also recommended that pianists be educated on prevention and cure of their musculoskeletal complaints.
