Abstract
This is a study on the effectivity of HMP and Ice Packs in the treatment of chronic ankle sprain in the presence of inflammation. Designing of the questioonaire was done and the accompanying letter of permission to gather data from various study sites of Philippine Orthopedic Instuititute, Veterans Memorial Medical center, V. Luna Medical Center, Philippine Sports Commission, Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Ospital ng Maynila, and Fort Bonifacio Hospital. 20 subjects of which 15 are PT and 5 are Physiatrists who have met the following criteria: licensed, have handled/treated actual patients with chronic ankle sprain with inflammation, male or female, number of patients seen with chronic ankle sprain with inflammation in their entire field of experience were randomly selected from the said centers to participate in this study. The subjects were to answer the questionnzires which included their confirmation of the experiences in handling such case, age and sex of their patients, their choice of madality (HMP or Ice Pack),their reason, effectiveness of the preffered modality and the precautions which they have undertaken. From the 20 subjects only 75% of which have actually handled chronic ankle sprain with imflammation with males more predominantly affected than females. HMP was more preferred as treatment on the said condition (80%) the ice pack (20%) with HMP use, 75% of the patients hastened thier healing process and shorthened their rehabilitation period with concomittant decrease in pain, imflamation, and muscle spasm/ guarding, and improvement in ambulation, range of motion of ankle joint and muscle strength. With ice process with the progress seen only as decrease in pain, inflammation, and muscle sparm/guarding with no improvement in ambulation, range of motion of ankle joint, and muscle strength. Comparing the overall progress seen in the use of HMP, 79.7% and ice packs, 38.8% we concluded that HMP is the modality of choice and is more effective than ice packs in the treatment of chronic ankle sprain in the presence of inflammation.
