Abstract
Many factors contribute to the musculoskeletal problems that the stevedores are prone of. This study is formulated to provide information on the most common work-related problems that the stevedores are experiencing and the factors contributing to such musculoskeletal problems. A total number of 20 out of 30 stevedores were qualified to answer a 6-item checklist of type of questionnaire and the same time visually observed for the purpose of acquiring knowledge on the most common factors contributing to the musculoskeletal complaints. Data elicited were categorized according to age and number of respondents, type of work-related musculoskeletal complaints and affected areas of the body, working experince as a stevedore, and knowledge about physical therapy data were tabulated and interpreted in percentage and was analyzed descriptively. After which a seminar was conduted to focus on proper body mechanics in lifting, education on the antomy of the low back and purpose of these structure in relation with their work. It was found that 40% of the subjects belongs to the 26-30 years old age bracket with the common musculoskeletal complaints of pain followed by weakness and numbness. The common affected areas of the body were the back followed by the shoulder and the whole body. It was also determined that 60% of the study population are less knowledgeable of the role of PT in the industrial setting. Above findings indicate that stevedores need better knowledge on proper body mechanics to eliminate or somehow decrease the musculoskeletal problems that they are experiencing. Thus, a follow-up study is recommended to further assess the knowledge of the stevedores on physical therapy and the compliance of each stevedore to proper body mechanics and health education.
