Abstract
Independence in activities of daily living (ADL) is crucial to each individuals. This holds true even for individuals with impairments. the disability should not come to the extent of not being able to carry out the ADL. Many conditions may lead to this unwanted disability if left untreated such as in the case of Frozen Shoulder. The aim of the study was identify the functional impairment brought about by Frozen Shoulder to Affected patients specifically in self-care activities. The study provided information regarding the most common problems in the aspect of self-care that a form shoulder patient find difficult to carry out. The subjects were limited to all out- patients who underwent rehabilitation at the DLSUMC-DIMDRU from 1996-1997 for three months at most; must be diagnosed to have Frozen Shoulder; must be 40-70 years old; and must have no other medical or surgical conditions that may effect the patients functional prognosis. The researchers, using chart review gathered the necessary data, Among the 23 patients diagnosed to have frozen shoulder, only 12 patients met the criteria set in the study. Data gathered were tabulated and analyzed descriptively. Data showed that the most common aspects of self-care done with difficulty by Frozen Shoulder patients was upper garment dressing affecting 100% of the subject. Results showed that among the twelve patients, the most common occupation they were acquainted to were being an office employee, seamen, teachers and other. Among the 12 patients, 75% were all females ranging from older age brackets (56-70 y/o), 25% of them were males ranging from 40-55 y/o. Results also showed that three were no direct relation between improvement of patients and having greater frequency of exercise. The authors recommend that patients with Frozen Shoulder be educated about their condition and the preventive managemnet for the possible sequelae. Physical Therapy services in terms of functiona; assessment and treatment are recommended for patients with this kind of conditions. Referrals to Occupational Therapists for improvement in carrying out ADL are also recommended. In this line, the authors encourage further researchers as to the efficacy of preventive care programs for Frozen shoulder patients with emphasis on the preventive exercises and much needed modifications for independence in ADL which include the upper garment dressing.
