Abstract

The study was based on Republic Act # 344, otherwise known as the Accessibility Law, which states that certain buildings, institutions, establishments and public utilities are required to install facilities and other devices to enhance the mobility of disabled persons. This study aims to evaluate the architectural accessibility of commercial establishments to wheelchair borne individuals and we have particularly chosen Alabang Town Center. The results of this study can be used by the owners and developers of Alabang Town Center in making appropriate modifications if needed to make their establishment more accessible to handicapped individuals especially the wheelchair borne. The study was confined to the Lower Ground Level except for the Supermarket and the individuals cinemas utilities by our subjects. The survey instruments used in this study was a form based on the standard recommended measurements. The survey instrument is a checklist which contains the name of the areas to be evaluated. This form recorded the presence or absence of architectural features in the area being evaluated, the number of and the specifications of different design elements measured, described and recorded. After assessment, the adata gathered were reviwed, summarized, for analysis. A percentages analysis was prepared for each category of architectural features actually implemented as compared to those found in the checklist as recorded and was calculated to provide overall level of features present in the areas assessed are accessibly to wheelchair borne individuals and modifications of the features that did not comply with the recommendation is no longer necessary. Hopefully, the researchers recommend to the administration if Alabang Town Centers, that they place a specified number of emergency exits. We also recommend that the two elevators be specified for disabled individuals by placing the International Symbol for Access. Other than these, no modifications are needed for those architectural features that did not comply with the minimum requirement.
